60% of men and 50% of women will experience at least one trauma in their lives.

Anyone living through times of oppression, poverty, trauma, dislocation or war can experience trauma.

Without healing, this trauma can leave markers on the emotional, molecular, and biochemical level for generations. Its effect is cumulative and collective.*

At this year’s Innovations in EMDR Conference, you’ll learn the effects of ancestral and intergenerational trauma and how an Attachment-Focused EMDR approach heals these wounds and stops the cycle.

  • Discover the approach industry experts use to address these wounds and to address present-day racism.
  • Identify how these diverse lineages can provide access to healthy and whole resources.
  • Explore how these approaches support others with diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • If you’re looking for tools and EMDR adaptations to support those with diverse cultural backgrounds, you don’t want to miss this 3-day event.

Here’s what people said about last year’s conference:

The conference had so much heart! The presenters were not only informative, but their delivery was compassionate and humble. This is just what everyone needed during these times.

Sara Dietzel, MA

Innovations in EMDR is for clinicians who are willing to break the constraints of common stereotypes and old ways of thinking. We’ll explore new frontiers in EMDR clinical practice that honor and respect the multiplicity of human expression. All based on Attachment-Focused EMDR’s proven track record.

This multidimensional, integrated approach lays a foundation for new ways to support healing across multiple cultures and generations.

Topics & Presenters

Attachment-Focused EMDR and Multidimensional Ancestral Healing

Presented by Laurel Parnell, Ph.D.

Traumas in familial and ancestral lineages carry forward from the past into our lives in the present. Many of us live with fears, limiting self-constructs and blockages associated with experiences and messages passed on in our ancestral lines. Sometimes traumas held in the ancestral lineage seem too overwhelming to heal and are passed on from generation to generation oftentimes remaining buried and unspoken. There also exists, in everyone’s lineage, healthy, whole ancestry that may be unremembered, but can be accessed and used as resources for healing work.

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to bring an Attachment-Focused EMDR approach to healing ancestral trauma.
  • Identify methods and scripts for accessing wholesome healthy resources from the ancestral lineage that can be used for healing.
  • Describe how ancestral and other resources can be used for intergenerational developmental repair as well as to heal areas of the lineage that carry traumas.
  • Describe energetic chords and how to create control over what is allowed to continue through the lineage.
  • Explain how intergenerational and ancestral traumas can be targeted and reprocessed with EMDR, including past life traumas.

Recognizing the Trauma History of Colonization of Native American/Indigenous FNMI People and How to Support the Healing of Attachment Wounds

Presented by Shelley Spear Chief, MCSW, RSW, CCTP

Shelley Spear Chief will describe the history of what happened to the Indigenous People across Turtle Island and the transmission of Intergenerational Trauma. She will explain how attachment was severed in families as a result of what happened including: residential school history/foster care/adoption/incarceration/disconnection from self and community/disconnection from cultural beliefs/disconnection from family. She will share how to support healing with attuned resourcing of the standard EMDR protocol in ways to support Indigenous people on their healing journey.

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • To describe 2 ways in which historical trauma and colonization impacted Indigenous People.
  • Identify 2 or more methods for adapting attuned resourcing of the standard EMDR protocol to support Indigenous people in healing.
  • Describe how a well-known therapeutic model can be adapted to support Indigenous People.

Attachment-Focused EMDR and Treating Intergenerational and Ancestral Trauma The Use of Resource Tapping, AF-EMDR, and Interweaves across the generations

Presented by Julie Probus-Schad, MSW, LCSW

From epigenetics to the family transmission of trauma to the most recent term used in the research, “inherited trauma,” as Attachment-Focused EMDR clinicians, we are presented with the complexity of working with our clients and what went into their nervous systems through the stories and experiences of their ancestors. The blocking beliefs and body sensations may originate with our clients or with the generations before them. This session will focus on using AF-EMDR and Resource Tapping to treat intergenerational and ancestral trauma, as demonstrated through case material.

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to identify blocking beliefs and body sensations that might be linked to inter-generational and/or ancestral trauma.
  • Describe how Attachment-Focused EMDR and Resource Tapping can be used to treat intergenerational and ancestral trauma.

Attachment-Focused EMDR with Singaporean Clients: Cultural Issues, Adaptations and Helpful Strategies

Presented by Yvonne LekPh.D.

In this presentation Dr. Yvonne Lek will describe key features of Singaporean society that contribute to challenges in the treatment process such as affect avoidance, shame and limited verbal expression. She will describe how she has employed Attachment-Focused EMDR in the treatment of her clients to develop safety and to increase emotional capacity, as well as how she has used it to repair developmental wounding and to process traumas. She will discuss modifications, including the use of art, to meet the cultural needs of Singaporeans which will be illustrated with case studies.

At the end of  this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe parenting styles and cultural issues that contribute to psychopathology and treatment considerations in Singapore.
  • Identify modifications and adaptations to EMDR to meet the cultural and emotional needs of Singaporean clients presenting with limited emotional and verbal expression.
  • Describe methods for building psychological safety and increasing capacity for emotional regulation using sensory techniques, as well as the use of alternative mediums (e.g. art) in the treatment process.

EMDR as a Soul Healing Intervention for Racial, Historical, and Intergenerational Trauma with African American Clients

Presented by Wendy Ashley, Psy.D, LCSW

Participants will be provided with information to increase awareness and skills to navigate historical and intergenerational trauma, race-based trauma, and microaggressions in facilitating EMDR with African American clients. These tools will promote increased self-awareness, clarity regarding antiracist actions in clinical settings, and accountability related to power and privilege. Facilitators will provide strategies and recommendations to implement an antiracist, inclusive approach when facilitating EMDR therapy, with emphasis on clinician positionality in identifying, assessing, and alleviating oppression-based trauma with marginalized clients. This workshop provides proactive procedural adaptations for incorporating an intersectionality and anti-oppressive lens in EMDR therapy, acknowledgment of stigma, shame, and historical trauma, and the relevance of identity, privilege, and inclusion to promote healing when working with African American clients.

In this workshop participants will learn:

  • To describe 2 ways in which historical trauma, lived experiences of racial trauma, intergenerational trauma, and stigma impact marginalized groups with implications for EMDR treatment.
  • How to identify 2 or more methods of clinician positionality that can be used to develop an authentic relationship and promote an intersectional, antiracist approach in EMDR therapy.
  • How to identify 3 EMDR adaptations to implement with AA clients

Humanitarian EMDR Related Services Provided by the Trauma Assistance Program-International, TAP-IN Early EMDR Interventions with Ukrainian Refugees

Presented by Julie Probus-Schad, MSW, LCSW

Through case examples, participants will be introduced to the Parnell innovation, Tapping Through the Trauma, an EMDR-Related Early Intervention; as well as learning a related innovation, Tapping Through the Moment, a protocol initially designed for and taught to frontline medical workers and first responders throughout the Covid-19 pandemic to increase resilience and better cope with ongoing traumatic stressors while treating patients in real-time. These protocols have been modified and used in person and virtually with displaced people from Ukraine seeking refuge in New York, Latvia, and worldwide. The protocols can be utilized within the first few hours of the initial traumatic experience and or in the days and weeks to follow.

Participants will also learn how to integrate services into marginalized communities in a culturally sensitive, community-centered way. The adaptations for the people fleeing war-torn Ukraine will be specifically outlined.

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe culturally sensitive adaptations for working with Ukrainian clients.
  • Identify how to integrate modifications to work with specific cultures.
  • Use two protocols for working with recent traumas cross-culturally.

Using Somatic Interventions to Address Shame in EMDR Treatment

Presented by Sean Frankino, LCSW, SEP, ESQ

The workshop will address the prevailing thinking around the relationship between shame and trauma.  First, I will define the different contemporary perspectives on shame. Second, I will describe the ways that shame is a cause, consequence of and defense to trauma.  I will then show how shame is typically addressed in an EMDR treatment and propose that somatic interventions, given their ability to effectively address freeze states and engage the underlying physiology of shame, are a useful tool in managing shame states.  Video of client sessions will 0be shown to illustrate some of these interventions.

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe the neurophysiological nature of shame and its relationship to trauma therapy and more specifically EMDR therapy.
  • Identify three ways to address shame with somatic interweaves within the context of an EMDR treatment.
